Quick start (first-time setup)

When you activate ProductScribe, the ProductScribe → Getting started screen opens with a 5-step checklist. Each step turns green when it’s done.

1. Connect a provider. Go to ProductScribe → Settings, choose OpenAI, Anthropic Claude or Google Gemini, paste your API key and press Test connection. You should see “Connected. Model … answered.” Press Save settings. The key field then shows only “Saved”.
2. Pick your content. On the same screen, tick the fields to write, choose a brand voice, language and description length, and save.
3. Try one product. Edit any product. In the ProductScribe AI box on the right, press Write with AI. After 10–30 seconds a button appears: Suggestion ready. Review and approve it.
4. Review and approve. The review screen shows the current text next to the suggestion. Edit anything, untick fields you don’t want, then press Approve selected fields.
5. Go bulk. Open ProductScribe → Bulk generate, filter products, press Estimate cost, then Start background writing.

Nothing is written to a product until you approve it, and every approval can be undone from the product’s History.

Requirements

• WordPress 6.3 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer (written for PHP 7.4 through 8.5).
• WooCommerce 7.0 or newer (HPOS compatible).
• An API key from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google (Gemini).
• Optional: Rankwise SEO Suite / Toolkit, Yoast SEO or Rank Math for the SEO fields.

AI providers, keys and models

• Model is a free text field, so you can use any model your account has access to. If a model is retired, type the provider’s replacement name.
• Test connection sends a tiny request (a few tokens). If you typed a new key, it tests that key before you save.
• Price per 1M tokens is used only for the cost estimates and the monthly usage total. Defaults are estimates; check your provider’s pricing page and adjust.
• Monthly spending limit (default $10) pauses ProductScribe when its estimated spend for the month reaches the limit. Set 0 for no limit.
• Removing a key: tick “Remove saved key” and save.
• wp-config.php keys: define RWPS_OPENAI_API_KEY, RWPS_CLAUDE_API_KEY or RWPS_GEMINI_API_KEY to keep keys out of the database. The settings screen then shows “Set in wp-config.php”.

Content settings

The AI is told to use only the facts in your product data (name, type, price, SKU, attributes, weight/size, categories, tags and existing text) and never invent specifications, certifications or claims.

Writing one product

1. Save the product first (the AI reads the saved data).
2. In the ProductScribe AI box, optionally tick Use main image or Include fields that already have content.
3. Press Write with AI and follow the review link.

The box also shows the product’s current SEO checklist score and its History.

You can also select products on Products → All Products and choose the bulk action Write with ProductScribe. They are added to the background queue.

Bulk generate

1. Choose products: categories (leave empty for all), “only products that are missing” a long description, a short description or SEO fields (or no filter), product status, and a maximum (up to 500 per run).
2. Estimate cost: shows the number of products, the estimated input/output tokens, the estimated cost with your model and prices, and what you’ve spent this month. Products whose selected fields are all filled are skipped and counted.
3. Start background writing: products are queued. While the Bulk page is open it writes one product at a time and shows live progress. When you close it, WP-Cron continues in batches every 30 seconds.

WP-Cron note: WP-Cron runs when your site gets visits. If your host disables it (DISABLE_WP_CRON), set up a server cron job that calls wp-cron.php every few minutes, or keep the Bulk page open. ProductScribe doesn’t need Action Scheduler or any extra database tables.

Cancel remaining removes products that haven’t been written yet. Finished suggestions stay in the review queue.

Review queue

ProductScribe → Review queue has tabs for Ready for review, Queued, Errors, Approved and Rejected. The menu shows a count of suggestions waiting for review.

• Review & edit: current text on the left, suggestion on the right (editable, with character counters for the SEO title and meta description, and an HTML preview). Untick any field you don’t want.
• Approve selected fields writes only the ticked fields to the product. Write again asks the AI for a fresh version. Reject leaves the product untouched.
• Bulk actions: approve or reject many suggestions at once, retry errors, or remove items from the list.
• SEO score: each row shows the score before → after.
• If a product is deleted, its suggestions are removed or flagged “Product deleted”. You never get a dead “not found” page.

Revision history and restore

Every approval first saves the product’s previous values for the changed fields. The last 10 versions are kept per product and listed in the ProductScribe box on the product screen. Click Restore this version to put them back. The values you replace are saved too, so a restore can also be undone.

SEO plugins and the SEO checklist score

The SEO checklist score (0–100) is calculated by ProductScribe from 10 checks: SEO title set and 30–60 characters, meta description set and 120–160 characters, focus keyword set and present in the title, meta description and description, a description of at least 150 words, and both a short description and image alt text. It’s a quick on-page guide, not a ranking prediction.

If Rankwise isn’t active, ProductScribe shows a dismissible note about it on its own screens and the Plugins screen.

External services, data sent and key storage

ProductScribe contacts the AI provider you select, and only when an administrator presses Write with AI, Test connection or Write again, or starts a bulk run (which continues through WP-Cron until the queue is empty or cancelled). Requests go directly from your site to the provider. Nothing is sent to 007AJ, and there’s no license check, tracking or phone-home.

• Data sent: store name, product name, type, price and currency, SKU, attributes, weight and dimensions, categories, tags, existing short and long description and focus keyword, brand voice and language, plus the main product image only in “use main image” mode. No customer, order or user data is sent.

• Key storage: keys are stored in your database in the rwps_keys option (not autoloaded), never displayed after saving, and only sent to their own provider. Or define them in wp-config.php. No keys are bundled with the plugin.
• Stored data: settings (rwps_settings), monthly usage totals (rwps_usage), suggestions as private rwps_suggestion posts, and revision history in product meta _rwps_revisions.

Uninstalling

Deleting the plugin removes its data only if Settings → Uninstall → Delete all ProductScribe data is ticked. Approved descriptions and SEO fields always stay on your products.

Troubleshooting & FAQ
