When a shopper leaves your WooCommerce store with a full cart, you have two realistic ways to reach them: an email or a WhatsApp message. Both can bring the sale back, but they differ in cost, setup, automation, consent and how people feel about receiving them. This comparison of email vs WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery will help you choose one, or decide how to combine them.
Disclosure: 007AJ sells a WhatsApp cart recovery plugin. We use email recovery too and say below when email is the better choice.
The short answer
- Choose email if you have many abandoned carts, want reminders to go out automatically and already have reliable email delivery.
- Choose WhatsApp if your customers already message you on WhatsApp, your products need a question answered before purchase, or carts are high in value and worth a personal touch.
- Use both if you can: an automated email for every cart and a personal WhatsApp message for the carts that matter most.
Side-by-side comparison
| Email reminders | WhatsApp reminders | |
|---|---|---|
| What you capture | Email address at checkout | Phone number at checkout |
| Automation | Fully automatic sequences | Automatic only through the WhatsApp Business API; free click-to-chat needs one tap per message |
| Running cost | Free with a WordPress plugin and SMTP, or part of an email service plan | Free with click-to-chat links; per-message fees through the Business API |
| Setup | Plugin plus working SMTP or an email service | Plugin plus a WhatsApp number (API route: Meta business account and approved templates) |
| Where it lands | Inbox, promotions tab or spam | A personal chat app |
| Two-way conversation | Possible, but few people reply | Natural; shoppers ask questions and get answers |
| Scale | Thousands of carts a day | Click-to-chat suits tens of carts a day per agent |
| Risk if overdone | Unsubscribes and spam complaints | Blocks and reports, which can hurt your number |
Email abandoned cart recovery
How it works
A plugin captures the email address as the shopper types it at checkout. After a set delay (often between 15 and 60 minutes), the cart is marked abandoned and a series of emails goes out, usually one within a few hours, one the next day and sometimes a final one with a discount. Each email has a link that restores the cart.
Strengths
- Hands-off. Once set up, it runs on its own at any volume.
- Cheap. Free plugins such as Cart Abandonment Recovery by CartFlows send unlimited reminders through your own mail server.
- Rich content. Product images, the full cart, reviews and a clear button.
- Universal. Every shopper has an email address; not everyone uses WhatsApp.
Weaknesses
- Deliverability. WordPress’s default PHP mail often lands in spam. You need SMTP or an email service. See how to fix WordPress emails with SMTP.
- Competition. Your reminder sits next to dozens of other marketing emails.
- One-way. If the shopper left because of a question, an email rarely gets it answered.
WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery
Two very different ways to send
1. Click-to-chat (free, one tap). The plugin builds a wa.me link with the reminder text and a cart restore link. You open it from your dashboard, WhatsApp opens with the message ready, and you tap send from your own WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. No API, no fees, but a person sends each message. This is how our 007AJ WhatsApp Order and Cart Recovery plugin works.
2. WhatsApp Business API (automatic, paid). Messages are sent automatically from a business number using templates that Meta must approve first. Meta charges per delivered template message, with rates that depend on the message category and the recipient’s country, and abandoned cart reminders count as marketing messages. You need a Meta business account, often a messaging provider, and a plugin that supports the API, such as CartFlows’ Cart Abandonment Recovery Pro.
Strengths
- Personal. The message arrives where people talk to friends and family, not in a crowded inbox.
- Conversation. A shopper who wasn’t sure about size, delivery time or payment can just reply and buy.
- Familiar in many markets. In much of Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, WhatsApp is how customers expect to contact a shop.
Weaknesses
- Consent matters more. A message on a personal app is more intrusive than an email. Show a clear notice next to the phone field and message only about the cart.
- Effort or cost. Click-to-chat takes a few seconds per cart; the API costs money per message and takes time to set up.
- Phone capture. You only reach shoppers who typed a phone number, and they must use WhatsApp.
What about recovery rates?
You will see impressive numbers online, such as very high WhatsApp open rates or a fixed percentage of carts recovered by email. Most of those come from vendors selling the tool, measured on their own customers. Treat them as marketing, not as a forecast. The only reliable number is your own: run one channel for a month, then the other or both, and compare recovered revenue per 100 abandoned carts. Most recovery plugins, including ours, mark recovered carts so you can count them.
A practical combined setup
- Every cart with an email: one automated email one to two hours after abandonment, without a discount.
- Carts with a phone number and a high value (you choose the threshold): a personal WhatsApp message the same day, offering help first.
- Still open the next day: one last email or WhatsApp follow-up with a single-use coupon.
- Stop after that, and never message someone who asked you not to.

Frequently asked questions
Is WhatsApp better than email for abandoned cart recovery?
Not always. WhatsApp is more personal and invites replies, which helps when shoppers have questions or carts are high in value. Email is automatic, cheap and works at any volume. Many stores get the best results by combining them.
Can I send WhatsApp cart reminders without the WhatsApp Business API?
Yes. Click-to-chat links open WhatsApp with the reminder already written, and you tap send. There are no fees, but each message is sent by a person. Automatic sending needs the Business API.
How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost for cart reminders?
Meta charges per delivered template message. The rate depends on the recipient’s country and the message category, and cart reminders are marketing messages. Messaging providers may add their own fees, so check current rates before you start.
How many abandoned cart reminders should I send?
Two or three in total is a common limit for email, and one or two for WhatsApp. More than that tends to cause unsubscribes, blocks and complaints.
Do I need consent to send abandoned cart reminders?
Be clear at checkout that you may contact shoppers about their cart, and always offer a way to stop. Consent rules differ by country, for example under GDPR in Europe or CASL in Canada, so check what applies to your store.
