Best WordPress Accessibility Plugins in 2026 (Checkers vs Overlays)

Accessibility is no longer a nice-to-have for WordPress sites. Demand letters and lawsuits over inaccessible websites keep coming in the United States, the European Accessibility Act has applied to many online shops and services since June 2025, and public-sector and corporate buyers increasingly ask for WCAG 2.2 AA. The good news is that WordPress has some excellent accessibility plugins. The bad news is that the most heavily advertised option, the overlay widget, is the one experts trust least. This guide compares the best WordPress accessibility plugins for 2026, explains checkers vs overlays, and says honestly where each one fits. We make AccessPilot (free) and AccessPilot Pro, and we point out where another plugin is the better choice.

Checkers vs overlays: the most important decision

Accessibility plugins fall into two broad groups:

  • Checkers and fixers scan your content and theme output, show you which image, heading, link or form field fails, and help you fix it in WordPress. The fix lives in your real page, so it helps every visitor and every assistive technology.
  • Overlays add a floating toolbar or script that tries to patch the page in the visitor’s browser (bigger text, contrast modes, sometimes automated “AI” repairs). They can be handy for some users, but they do not change your underlying markup, and many screen reader users report that overlays get in their way.

Overlay marketing has also drawn regulators’ attention. In April 2025 the US Federal Trade Commission finalised an order requiring accessiBe to pay $1 million, and barred it from claiming its automated product can make any website WCAG-compliant without evidence. The lesson for site owners: no widget makes a site compliant on its own. Use a checker, fix the problems at the source and test with a keyboard.

What to look for in a WordPress accessibility plugin

  • Checks the things that fail most often: missing alt text, low colour contrast, skipped headings, empty links and buttons, unlabeled form fields and vague link text such as “click here”.
  • Works where you write: an editor sidebar catches problems before you publish.
  • Site-wide reporting: one list of every page with errors, so you can prioritise.
  • Fixes, not just warnings: one-click alt text from the Media Library and small, standards-based theme fixes (skip link, visible focus outline).
  • Privacy: does scanning happen on your server, or is content sent to a cloud service?
  • Honest limits: automated tools catch a share of WCAG issues, not all. A good plugin says so.
  • Pricing: yearly subscription, per-page credits or a one-time price.

1. AccessPilot by 007AJ (free and Pro)

Disclosure: we make this plugin. AccessPilot checks your content against common WCAG 2.2 AA failures and helps you fix them where they start. The free version is fully functional with no locked features: alt text checks (including linked images with empty alt), colour contrast from inline colours, block colour classes and your theme.json palette, heading order, empty links and buttons, unlabeled form fields and vague link text. It adds a block editor sidebar, a background site-wide report, one-click alt text fixes from the Media Library, optional front-end fixes (skip link, visible focus outline, underlined content links) and an accessibility statement generator. It makes no external requests and adds no overlay.

AccessPilot Pro adds scheduled crawls of your full rendered pages (header, menus and footer included), bulk alt text from file names or your own AI endpoint, PDF checks for tags, title and language, WooCommerce product checks, a fix log with CSV export and branded client reports in HTML or PDF. It is a one-time purchase.

Good fit: small businesses that want to fix real problems without a monthly fee, and agencies that want to sell audits with their own branding. Not a fit: if you want 40+ automated checks with live expert office hours, Equalize Digital’s paid plans offer more hand-holding.

2. Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker

A well-established checker with over 40 automated checks based on WCAG 2.2. The free version scans unlimited posts and pages as you save them and shows issues in the editor and on the front end, with automated fixes for common barriers and an accessibility statement. Pro (from $190 a year for one site) adds full-site scanning including custom post types and archives, a central issue list and premium fixes. Higher tiers add audit history, CSV export and consultation calls.

Good fit: organisations that value extensive documentation and expert support. Watch: the yearly cost per site adds up for agencies with many client sites.

3. Web Accessibility by Elementor (formerly Ally)

Elementor’s plugin combines an accessibility assistant that scans pages and guides fixes, a usability widget with 15+ visitor features (font size, contrast, pausing animations) and a statement generator. The free plan includes 5 URL scans; paid plans add more scans, AI fix credits and site-wide fixes.

Good fit: Elementor sites that want guided fixes and are comfortable with a credit model. Watch: treat the widget as a convenience for visitors, not as a fix. Scan credits limit how many pages you can track.

4. WP Accessibility by Joe Dolson

A long-running free plugin from a respected accessibility developer. It fixes a range of common theme problems: adding skip links, a language attribute, removing problematic title attributes, forcing focus outlines and more. It is not a content checker, so pair it with one of the plugins above.

Good fit: older themes with structural problems you cannot change in code.

5. Editoria11y Accessibility Checker

A free, friendly checker that highlights problems as editors view and write content, with plain-language tips. It is designed to teach good habits rather than produce audit reports.

Good fit: sites with several writers who need gentle, in-context reminders.

Why we do not recommend overlays as your main tool

Overlays promise compliance with a single line of code. In practice, they cannot reliably rewrite every image description, form label or heading structure, and some interfere with the assistive technology people already use. Plaintiffs’ firms have also named sites that used overlays. If you want a visitor toolbar for convenience, fine, but fix the content underneath first.

A 30-minute accessibility routine for any WordPress site

  1. Run a site-wide scan with a checker and sort by issue type.
  2. Fix missing alt text first. It is the fastest fix and affects the most visitors. Decorative images should have empty alt text, not “image”.
  3. Check your theme palette for contrast. One palette change can fix hundreds of pages.
  4. Fix heading order on your top 10 pages: one H1, then H2s, then H3s.
  5. Label every form field. If you use Contact Form 7 or another builder, check the labels in the form settings. Our best WordPress form plugins for 2026 guide covers builders with accessible markup.
  6. Press Tab through your home page and checkout. Can you see where focus is? Can you reach and use every menu and button?
  7. Publish an accessibility statement with a contact method, so people can tell you about problems you missed.

Accessibility also helps SEO: descriptive alt text, clear headings and meaningful link text help search engines understand your pages. See how to set up SEO on a new WordPress site for the rest of the basics.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free WordPress accessibility plugin in 2026?

For content checking, AccessPilot free and the free Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker are both strong and scan unlimited posts and pages. WP Accessibility is a useful free companion for fixing theme issues.

Do accessibility overlays make a website ADA or WCAG compliant?

No tool can guarantee that. In 2025 the FTC fined accessiBe $1 million over claims that its overlay could make any site WCAG-compliant. Fix problems in your content and theme, and test manually.

Can an accessibility plugin check everything automatically?

No. Automated checkers catch common, machine-detectable problems such as missing alt text and low contrast. Keyboard and screen reader testing are still needed for things like focus order and meaningful descriptions.

Does accessibility help SEO?

Yes, indirectly. Alt text, a clear heading structure and descriptive links help search engines understand your content, and accessible pages are usually easier for everyone to use.

Do I need an accessibility statement?

It is good practice and is expected under many laws and procurement rules. It explains your commitment and gives visitors a way to report problems. Several plugins, including AccessPilot, can generate one.
