Rank Math is one of the most popular SEO plugins for WordPress. Rankwise is a newer, much smaller plugin that we make here at 007AJ. If you are choosing an SEO plugin for a new site, or you are wondering whether you need everything Rank Math offers, this comparison walks through what each plugin does, where each one is stronger, what they cost over time and how to switch safely. We have tried to be fair: Rank Math does several things Rankwise does not, and we say so.
The short answer
- Choose Rank Math if you want keyword rank tracking, AI writing tools, a schema builder with custom types, multisite support or a very large community with tutorials for every setting.
- Choose Rankwise if you want the on-page essentials plus a 404 log, redirects and audits in a plugin that makes no outside requests by default, with a one-time price instead of an annual renewal.
- Both handle the basics that actually move the needle for most sites: titles and descriptions, canonical tags, social cards, JSON-LD structured data, XML sitemap settings, breadcrumbs and redirects.

Setup and everyday use
Rank Math has a setup wizard that asks about your site type, connects to a free Rank Math account (needed for its Analytics module), imports settings from other SEO plugins and turns on modules. It has a lot of modules, which is powerful but can feel busy: you can switch modules off to keep the interface lean.
Rankwise is deliberately smaller. You set title and description templates once (with variables for every kind of page), fill in your organisation or person details for structured data, and then use the Rankwise SEO box on each post. The box shows a search preview and a social preview next to the fields, with readability and focus keyword checks. There is nothing to connect and no account to create. If you are following our guide on how to set up SEO on a new WordPress site, either plugin covers every step.
On-page SEO: titles, descriptions, canonicals and social cards
This is a tie. Both plugins let you set templates and per-page overrides for the search title and meta description, add canonical URLs, control noindex and nofollow, add site verification tags and output Open Graph and Twitter card tags. Both show length counters and previews. For most sites, getting these right on your top 20 pages matters more than any advanced feature.
Structured data (schema)
Rank Math is stronger here, especially on its higher plans, where you can build custom schema and save templates. Its free version already covers many common types.
Rankwise outputs a clean graph for your organisation or person, website, page, article and breadcrumbs in both editions. Suite adds FAQ, how-to, product, local business, recipe, event and video, and only prints them when the required fields are filled in, with missing fields listed in the editor. That avoids a common problem: half-filled schema that triggers errors in Search Console. See how to add schema markup to WordPress without code for a walkthrough.
Redirects and 404s
Both handle 301 redirects and offer to add a redirect when you change a published post’s address. Rank Math includes a 404 monitor and redirect manager. Rankwise Toolkit has exact redirects (301, 302, 307, 410 and 451) with loop detection and CSV import and export. Suite adds a 404 log with hit counts and referring host, a one-click “add redirect” link, automatic pruning and pattern (regular expression) redirects with a tester and safety checks against slow patterns. The Rankwise 404 log never stores visitor IP addresses or user agents, which keeps it simpler from a privacy point of view.
Keyword tracking, analytics and AI
This is where Rank Math clearly offers more. Its Analytics module shows Search Console data inside WordPress, paid plans track keyword positions over time, and Content AI offers writing and optimisation suggestions using credits. If you rely on those features daily, Rank Math is the better tool.
Rankwise does not do rank tracking or AI writing. Suite can optionally show cached Search Console clicks, impressions and queries, using a Google OAuth client that you create, with read-only access and encrypted tokens. It is off by default. Many site owners are happy to use Search Console itself and keep the plugin lean.
Audits, internal links and bulk editing
Rank Math provides an SEO analysis of your site and, on paid plans, link-building helpers. Rankwise Suite includes an SEO audit (titles, descriptions, noindex, duplicates and thin content), a Site Health test for critical findings, internal link suggestions from an index kept in your own database, a list of images missing alt text, a bulk editor for titles, descriptions and noindex, and a role manager. It also has WP-CLI commands (wp rankwise) for audits, redirects, 404 pruning, settings export and import, sitemap flush and link reindexing, which is handy if you manage sites from the command line.
Sitemaps, robots.txt and llms.txt
Rank Math generates its own XML sitemaps. Rankwise works with the sitemap built into WordPress and gives you settings to include or exclude content, plus news and video sitemaps in Suite. Rankwise also includes a robots.txt editor with a safety check, optional rules for AI crawlers and an optional /llms.txt file. Both approaches work well with Google; the main thing is to submit one sitemap URL in Search Console and stick with it.
Performance and privacy
Both plugins are reasonably light for what they do. Rank Math loads more modules by default, so switch off any you don’t use. Rankwise runs entirely on your site and makes no outbound requests unless you connect Search Console. If your clients or your own policies require that a plugin does not contact outside services, that is a real advantage.
One thing worth knowing if you run Rank Math today: in August 2026, version 1.0.277 added a Support Agent that created a WordPress Application Password when an administrator opened Help & Support while connected to a Rank Math account. After public criticism, Rank Math removed the feature for now in 1.0.277.2. If you opened Help & Support on an affected version, go to Users → Profile → Application Passwords and revoke anything named “WAP – Rank Math Support Agent”. Whichever SEO plugin you use, check that list from time to time.
Pricing over five years
Rank Math’s free version is excellent value. Its PRO plan is an annual subscription for personal sites, with Business and Agency plans for client sites, and renewal prices are higher than first-year prices. Over five years that is several hundred dollars for PRO and more for agency plans.
Rankwise SEO Toolkit is free. Rankwise SEO Suite is a one-time $19 purchase with future updates included. If you don’t need rank tracking or AI tools, that is a big difference over time.
Who should use which
- Bloggers who track keywords daily: Rank Math PRO.
- Agencies on multisite: Rank Math (Rankwise does not support multisite).
- Small business and brochure sites: either; Rankwise Toolkit is enough for many.
- Local businesses: both offer local SEO; Rankwise Suite adds LocalBusiness schema and an address block with a map link (nothing embedded).
- Privacy-sensitive or no-outbound sites: Rankwise.
- Anyone who dislikes subscriptions: Rankwise Suite.
How to switch from Rank Math to Rankwise (or back)
- Back up your site first (database included).
- Install Rankwise and run its importer. It copies titles, descriptions and other SEO fields from your previous SEO plugin, shows a preview first and has an undo button. The other plugin’s data is not changed.
- Export your Rank Math redirects and import them into Rankwise with CSV.
- Deactivate Rank Math. Never run two SEO plugins at the same time, or you will print duplicate titles and two schema graphs.
- Check five key pages with “view source” for one title, one description and one JSON-LD block, then test them in Google’s Rich Results Test.
- Submit your sitemap URL again in Search Console and watch the Pages report for a couple of weeks.
Switching back works the same way in reverse, because both plugins keep their own data.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rankwise free?
Yes. Rankwise SEO Toolkit is free with titles, social cards, structured data, sitemap settings, breadcrumbs, redirects and an importer. Suite adds the extras for larger sites.
Is Rank Math free good enough?
For many sites, yes. Its free version is generous. You pay for rank tracking, Content AI and some advanced schema and redirect options.
Will switching SEO plugins hurt my rankings?
Not if titles, descriptions, canonicals and redirects come across correctly. Use the importer, check key pages and don’t leave both plugins active.
Does Rankwise support WooCommerce?
Yes. Optional WooCommerce SEO features appear when WooCommerce is active, and Suite adds product schema.
Can I use Rankwise on client sites?
Each purchase is a fully licensed copy for use on your own sites. It is a single-site plugin and does not support multisite networks.
